Configuration backup & restore
Back up your workspace configuration to an encrypted JSON file, then restore it on the same or another install. Find it under Settings → Backup (admin only).
This backs up configuration, not conversations or messages.
What's included
You choose which sections to export:
- Settings — workspace settings and policies.
- Inboxes — channel setup (channel secrets are encrypted).
- Labels — labels and canned responses.
- Users — agent accounts.
Secrets — channel tokens, integration keys — are encrypted per-field with your passphrase. Everything else stays readable so the file is easy to inspect.
Export
- Open Settings → Backup.
- Tick the sections you want.
- Enter a Passphrase (at least 8 characters). Keep it safe — it can't be recovered, and without it the file can't be restored.
- Click Export. A file like
chatapp-config-YYYY-MM-DD.jsondownloads.
Restore (import)
- Under Import, click Choose file and pick a backup JSON. You'll see a summary (date and counts); sections not present in the file are disabled automatically.
- Enter the passphrase used when the backup was created.
- Click Import.
Import is a merge/upsert — it updates matching items and creates missing ones, and never wipes your workspace. Entries are matched by stable keys (email for users, name for labels/teams, name+channel for inboxes), so re-importing is safe.
Good to know
- A wrong passphrase is detected before anything is written — a failed import changes nothing.
- Password hashes and 2FA secrets are never exported. Any brand-new users created by an import get a random password and are listed as needing a password reset — set them a new password afterwards.
- Global platform settings (S3, Pusher, branding) are not part of this per-workspace backup — those are managed separately by the platform operator.
